Choosing an age appropriate game console is important. Not only so that it’s usable by your kids, but also so your money isn’t wasted. Think about who you are purchasing it for and what you want to be able to do with it. Ask yourself, “Do I want this to be something educational?” “How old are the children that will be playing the games.” “What types of games are offered with the particular system?” Many new kid games are still a little advanced so know what you need first, this way you get a purchase that works for you and your family.

There are countless choices of kids’ games. Some are educational and some are challenging, whatever the genre making sure it’s age appropriate is important. Because of the ever advancing technology, games are being made to be more and more realistic. Therefore making it essential for parents to pay attention to the selection of the games you allow in your home. In the past, video games were mainly made for educational and entertainment purpose graphics were much simpler and you knew what to expect. Now, you never know what villain is going to show up or how graphic he may look.

Some of the options out there in the world of game systems are, Sony Playstation, Nintendo (GameCube & DS), Xbox/ Xbox 360, Wii and the Leap Frog Leapster. All of these game systems are required to provide generalized rating for their products. The Leap Frog Leapster is probably the safest game system for young minds. It is totally designed for children therefore all the games available with this system are appropriate. Next I would choose the Wii. With its family oriented games everyone at home can get some fun in. The rest of the systems I’ve mentioned are all in the same category because they have games that are available for both the young and the more mature audiences. Those games are identified with the rating M for mature. E is the rating for everyone. Identify your needs and what you want your children to be exposed to and use that as a guide to making your purchase.

Selection of the appropriate game system is important. Most game systems include an option for Parental Locks to be put in place providing extra control on what your kids are exposed to. With the advancements in technology coming about everyday, even those games made for kids have some things that maybe outside of what you want your child viewing. Take the time and learn the systems out there, this will give you the upper hand on your decision. After all keeping our children safe from inappropriate content is each our individual responsibilities.
